Internal combustion engine (I.C.)

These are largely used in transport vehicles like cars, trucks, motorcycles etc. In this engine a fuel is burned and the energy from the burning fuel is transferred to the pistons, which through gears, turns the wheels, thus moving the auto mobile.

There are two types of IC engines:-
1) Petrol Engines
2) Diesel Engines

Petrol engines :- In this type of engine the fuel-air mixture after being compressed is ignited by an electric spark. It is also called spark ignition engine, and the product of combustion do work on the piston and power is transferred to the crank shaft.

Diesel Engines :- In this type of engine only air is inducted  by suction into the cylinder and compressed to a high pressure.  The fuel is injected in fine atomized from into the hot compression air. The mixture gets self ignited and the combustion products do work in the piston.  It is also called compression ignition engines.
