Thermodynamic system :- It is defined as a quantity of a matter or a region in space upon which attention is concentrated in the analysis of a problem.
Surroundings :- Everything other than the system is called surrounding.
Universe :- The combination of the system and the surroundings is called universe.
Three classes of systems:-
1)open system :- The type of system in which both mass and energy can be transferred across the system boundary.
Ex- Air compressor
2) Close system :- The type of system in which no mass transfer across the system boundary. There may be an energy transfer into or out of the system.
Ex:- A certain quantity of fluid in a cylinder bounded by a piston constitute a closed system.
3)Isolated system:- The type of system in which there is no interaction between system and surroundings
